Fiesta Mayor de Verdiales - Venta San Cayetano

Every year on the 28 December Spain celebrates La Fiesta de los Santos Inocentes or the Day of the Innocents. In Malaga, the fiesta is closely linked to rural traditions and to this day it is celebrated with a colourful display of folk music known as verdiales.

Verdial is an olive that always remains green, even when pickled, and the peasant communities that harvest them are known as verdiales. The celebration of the olive harvest in rural Andalusia dates back to the pre-Roman era and many ceramic sculptures from this period depict street musicians performing with instruments very similar to the cymbals and tambourines that give today's celebration of Los Santos Inocentes its colourful and festive character.
