Malaga Carnival -

During the week before Lent, Málaga is filled with colour as the Carnival parades take to the streets, including murgas or street bands, comparsas or masquerades, quartets and choruses.

The carnival disappeared completely during the years of Franco's dictatorship, but finally made a colourful and boisterous comeback in 1980. The first festival of murgas and comparsas was held in 1981 at the Cervantes Theatre. The carnival reappeared thanks to the work of the Friends of the Carnivals association, composed of a representative from each one of the existing murgas.

The festivities, held around Ash Wednesday, last ten days. In the weeks preceding the carnival people organise events such as typical lunches with soups and cabbage as a prelude to the fun, and the preliminary selection of the musical groups that will participate in the final competition takes place.
